FLOWERS IN TODAY'S ISRAEL
In Israel flowers bloom all year round, in both the winter rainy season as well as in the burning heat of summer. Almost all of the very rich flora of Israel are flowering plants, and most of them are attractively colored.
In this respect, Israel differs from most western countries where flowers cease blooming in the cold and frigid winter.
The winter flower season begins after the early rains have fallen in November. The first flowers bloom shortly after the first rains, mainly those of bulbous plants with pinkish-white flowers. Masses of yellow dandelions appears a few weeks later. In January fields in Israel are covered with the blood-red flowers of the anemone.
Here and there can be seen the beautiful red blooms of the tulip. During the 1930's and the 1940's, tulips dominated the landscape of the Sharon as well as the mountains. These flowers have since been greatly diminished in the wild. The red species of poppy, however, still thrives.
In addition to these, there are hundreds of species of other flowers, several of which are among the prettiest in the world.
The fragrant narcissus can be found in March. There are many species of orchids in May. The gladiolus and the iris also blooms at this time.
The number and variety of wild flowers has been increasing year by year since the passing of the State of Israel's strict nature protection laws.
