How to Buy Things on the Internet

(Continued)

Some Useful Suggestions:
If you still have some misgivings about using your credit card on the Internet, here are some suggestions.

You don't always need to use a credit card when buying on the Internet. Many sites permit the use of checks and electronic wallets. Electronic wallets involve depositing a sum of money in a shopping account, and withdrawing sums from this account in order to make the various purchases.

For example, the Internet service provider Netvision has a service whereby customers carry out purchases on the Internet without revealing their credit card number. The purchases are carried out with the use of the customer's Netvision user name. Netvision, for its part, guarantees payment to the store while collecting payment from the customer. This is but one method used in carrying out purchases on the Internet.

As a rule, you should not buy from web sites which do not list their complete company address and phone numbers. In case of doubt, you can always phone these numbers for additional information. Most reputable companies will devote a web page somewhere on their site describing who exactly they are. This is their way of saying that they have nothing to hide.

If the sums of money involved are small, then this is usually enough. However, if you want to be absolutely certain that the company or store has not been involved in any questionable service in the past, then it will be worthwhile to visit the following two sites:

If the company or store has been involved in any questionable business practices, then the chances are that it will be listed at one of these sites. If you find nothing unusual, then you probably can proceed to safely buy from the company or store. Remember: the overall majority of firms doing business on the Internet are honest, and strive to give the best possible service to their customers. If they were not, then they would not stay in business for long. News travels fast on the Internet.

An estimated 17 million people will buy products and services this year through the Internet. Will you be one of them? Having trouble with the Order Form?
