PASSOVER

Passover occurs on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Nissan. This comes out to April 1st, 1999. The Seder itself is held on the evening of Wednesday, March 31st (Passover eve).

According to tradition, Passover was divinely ordained as a permanent reminder of God's deliverance of the Children of Israel from Egyptian bondage. What child has not heard the story of the ten plagues?

The Passover festival was kept throughout the period of the Second Temple. Both the historian Josephus and the Talmud tell of the immense Jewish crowds who gathered in Jerusalem to offer the sacrifice of the paschal lamb.

In modern-day Israel a certain excitement in the air can be felt beginning the morning before Passover eve. In most places of work, people will officially work only half a day because it is 'Erev Hag.' A lot of people will not come to work at all on this day. There are simply too many preparations to be made for the holiday Seder. (Yes, in Israel there is only one Seder, while in the Diaspora there are two).

Whether or not a person is religious, it seems like just about everyone in Israel is either invited to a Seder at the home of friends or relatives, or is holding a Seder themselves. This, of course, is only an impression but the roads are clogged in the evening just before the time the Seder is held, and then the roads are clogged again around 10:30 and later when most Seders are over and people head back to their homes (the non-religious, since religious people do not drive on the holiday).

By law, all places of entertainment are closed during Jewish holidays. For most people, there is no place to go except to a Seder, or to stay at home and watch television. The Seder in Israel becomes a warm family gathering where family and relatives get together, and everyone takes part in reciting the Passover Haggadah.
